Full coverage crowns are a treatment option for broken down or cracked teeth. A crown, or “cap”, covers most or all of a tooth to protect it from further damage. A full coverage crown is often recommended when a tooth has a large cavity, filling, or root canal that compromises the strength of the tooth, or when a tooth has visible cracks that may lead to fracture. “Cracked Tooth Syndrome” is when a fractured tooth causes severe pain when biting down or eating. This is a condition that should be addressed quickly. Otherwise, it may lead to severe pain, infection, or even tooth loss.

General Uses

The jaw muscles are some of the strongest in our body, sometimes causing teeth to endure great stress while chewing. Some patients clench or grind their teeth- sometimes even while sleeping- causing even more stress to their teeth. A crown helps brace weakened teeth and provides a degree of protection. While a broken and cracked tooth can be a complex matter, a crown is a helpful treatment option designed to protect the tooth for years to come.

What are crowns made of? Crowns can be made of gold, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and Zirconia. Zirconia has become a popular material for crowns in modern dentistry, because it combines the strength of a metal with the beauty of porcelain. They are tooth colored crowns that are strong, long lasting, and look very natural.

Traditionally, two appointments were needed to restore a tooth with a crown.  First, the tooth was prepared, and a temporary crown placed while an impression was sent to a laboratory to make the final crown. At Garden Ridge Center for Dentistry, we have state-of-the-art milling technology, and can make “same day” Zirconia crowns! That means no temporary crown is needed for many cases.

Full coverage crowns may also be useful in cosmetic dentistry. Crowns may help achieve your goals of a beautiful, uniform, bright smile. Some complex cases involving multiple crowns for a full smile transformation often still require more than one appointment, and the technology of a licensed dental laboratory.
